Camino of the Sandstone Churches

Camino van die Sandsteenkerke

The present-day towns of the Klein Karoo were founded from the middle of the 19th century onwards. Congregations were established and churches built as missionaries and more worshipers arrived. This brief historical background illustrates both the presence of the dominant denominations and the timeline of the building of places of worship in the Klein Karoo.

Most of the historic churches were built using sandstone - hence the stories of the Camino de las iglesias de arenisca. (The way of the Sandstone Churches).

The Origin of Caminos

"Camino” is Spanish meaning a path, road, journey, or way. The Camino de Santiago, or the Way of St. James, introduced the “Camino” concept to the world. The Way of St. James is more than just walking along a route that traces the missionary journey of St. James to Galicia in north-western Spain. Originally introduced as a pilgrimage to arrive at the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, the Camino de Santiago is very much, for many people, a voyage of self-discovery and spiritual upliftment. Pilgrims can select from many different routes and travel by foot or cycle.

Caminos (in deference to the Camino de Santiago) are nowadays found in many countries. Certain universally accepted values are associated with a Camino wherever it may be hosted. The most important of these values are in no order of importance: An experience of communion between pilgrims and local communities; peace; benevolence; history; hospitality; friendship; oneness with nature; solitude; a meaningful road; culminating in a truly life-changing event.

We are the voyagers, just looking for fellow Travellers to connect with us and live the journey. So.... come to us, bring along your bucket list and we will hit the road. Together we will explore the Klein Karoo and experience the hidden wonders of this beautiful region.

We are confident that you will at the end of your journey with us, confirm the great William Shakespeare's immortal words: "I speak of Africa and golden joys..."
